Impact story:

Isabelle Hau is the Executive Director of the Stanford Accelerator for Learning at Stanford University, where she leads a global movement grounded in learning sciences to ensure that Artificial Intelligence expands human potential, deepens human connection, and opens opportunities for learners too often overlooked.

A focus of her work centers on learners with learning differences, including neurodiverse learners and those with physical disabilities whose creativity and resilience are frequently underestimated.

She launched a first-of-its-kind AI and Learning Differences portfolio at Stanford, partnering with researchers, technologists, educators, and individuals with disabilities. Through symposiums, hackathons, and research-to-practice collaborations, the initiative reframes inclusive design not as accommodation but as a catalyst for innovation.

This work is helping shape some of the world’s most promising AI tools for learners with visible and invisible disabilities. They include the Autism Glass Project, which translates facial expressions into social cues for autistic learners; ROAR, a machine-learning dyslexia screener now used with over 100,000 children; KAI, which uses natural language processing to scaffold reading for learners with intellectual disabilities; and Journify Learning, a GenAI platform helping educators create personalized IEPs across 20 districts and expanding. In addition, a pipeline of more than 30 emerging projects are being developed through co-design with learners and families.

Her influence extends globally. Her Stanford white paper, AI + Learning Differences: Designing a Future with No Boundaries, has been downloaded more than 10,000 times, presented at the Vatican, and is shaping policy discussions worldwide. She has briefed US Congressional staffers, spoken before the Senate, and advised ministers of education around the world, as well as the largest US school districts, including Los Angeles and New York City on AI frameworks.

Hau collaborates closely with OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and others on responsible AI design and educator tools. She co-authored or reviewed foundational publications including OpenAI’s Teaching with AI and Google’s AI and the Future of Learning.

Her book Love to Learn articulates her belief that learning begins with love, and relational intelligence (RQ) is the next frontier of human development. She serves on the EDSAFE AI Alliance Steering Committee, the Brookings Global Task Force on AI & Education, the World Education Forum’s Education 4.0 Alliance, and the board of EDC.

Named one of Harvard Business School’s 100 Most Inspiring Women and twice honoured with the Leading Women in AI award at ASU+GSV (2024, 2025), Hau is shaping a future where every learner can learn and thrive.
